Why do you need shared_ptr? CEGUI creates and uses only one instance of CEGUI:System (and others) internally with singeltons. Each time you call CEGUI::System::getSingletonPtr() it will return the same pointer (if you created CEGUI::System before, of course).

I tried to fix the Irrlicht renderer some time ago and I was not able to finish it since it needs a full rewrite of everything, because Ident rewrote the whole renderer interface(s) and some things more. Also, I was not able to make Irrlicht use our own shaders which resulted in nothing being drawn....

You cannot find PDB files for any nv*.dll files since these are NVIDIA's graphic driver files.

There's no need to disable gui rendering. You can do it on-the-fly:

What are you doing?

What does getFirstSelectedItem() return? If it returns null getText() will crash your app since it tries to dereference a NULL pointer. Can you split line 49 so that you can check whether there is some valid pointer returned to you or not?

CEGUIBase-0.dll got loaded, everything is fine. There are just no Debug symbols since you seem to having it built in Release mode. Rebuild in 'RelWithDebSymbols' mode if you need speed and the symbols. But for true debugging I would recommend plain 'Debug' mode. Please rebuild in either one of these...

CEGUI does not handle inputs as long as you don't tell CEGUI that a key and which key has been pressed. Look here for a code snippet:

I did not look into details yet but event handlers have to return "true" if the event got handled. You return false.

You only have to link the .lib files. The .dll files have to be in the same folder as your applications main .exe file is.
