How to apply an outline to a font?

For help with anything that CEGUI doesn't offer straight out-of-the-box, e.g.:
- Implementation of new features, such as new Core classes, widgets, WindowRenderers, etc. ...
- Modification of any existing features for specific purposes
- Integration of CEGUI in new engines or frameworks and writing of new plugins (Renderer, Parser, ...) or modules

How to apply an outline to a font?

Postby Vindi » Sun Jan 28, 2007 18:03

Hi,

Does anyone know how to apply a black outline to a font?

Failing that, how could I fake it/hack it?

Thanks,
Mike

I have no idea :) but maybe you could first render the text in bold black and then in normal white so you could imitate an outline. Just an idea

Hey,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the bold version of the font had different spacing so didn't line up properly.

But it made me realise I could just render the same text behind it 8 times, and offset each a small amount in each direction of the compass. Its not ideal, but it doesn't seem to hurt the framerate, so it'll do :)

Hehe good idea. I remember i once did so, but only rendering it on the bottom right behind it, so it looks a bit like a shadow. That worked well too, and IIRC warcraft does this too.

Sounds like a quick and dirty drop shadow.

Does CEGUI 0.50 provide any font-outline features?

No news on this yet :P

I do want to revisit fonts again at some stage, because at the moment, while for many purposes things are fine, there are clearly instances where the support is not quite up to scratch. What my revisiting will result in, and whether that will include font outlines, has yet to be determined.

CE.
